The benefit of an eye sore

There is one old rectangular thing protruding out of a column in my office room (here). I dont know what it is but it is truly an eye sore.

People keep telling me that all officers' rooms are equipped with a coat hanger. I didnt have one in my room. Well, that's fine. 

I can just hang my coat on that rectangular thing.

I move the poster to the side, to give way for my coat. Initially it is in the middle of the column.
